Choosing diagnostic equipment

Workshop Equipment

As with anything electronic, technology, in terms of vehicle electronic, moves fast, and so does the capabilities of workshop diagnostic equipment to keep up with it.

Fortunately, most modern diagnostic equipment is software based and the software can be regularly updated to keep up with new models and changes, but from time to time the actual technology of the vehicle changes requiring additional features or connectivity from the diagnostic tools beyond what a software update can provide. For instance, if you want to get into EV servicing, you may need to upgrade hardware as well as software.

There is a confusing array of brands and models out there, your needs will be unique, so we are not looking to provide a specific guide but rather highlight some areas you should consider.

Compatibility – does the supplier have access to latest data on the range of models you need to cover? (Japanese, European, Chinese, etc.) How regularly do they provide software updates and is there a cost to access these?

Functionality – does the equipment provide the functionality you need?  You might consider must have vs need to have vs nice to have features (as generally the more features, the higher the price)!

Usability – is it wireless (Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) enabled? Is it simple to use in terms of user-friendly menus and ease to access features?

Build quality and durability – brand reputation will help with this along with the reputation of the local supplier and their ability to support you with updates and repairs to the equipment if needed.

Training – does the supplier provide training or is there a third party that can train you and any new staff on using the equipment?

Reviews and recommendations – do you know someone with the equipment, or can the supplier give you a contact with someone who has it that you could talk to get an independent review?

Choosing suitable diagnostic equipment is a sizeable investment and is something that will affect the efficiency and ability of your business for a number of years to come so it is worth spending some time researching any purchases in this area.
