I’m sick of writing about Covid, and I am sure you are sick of reading about it, so let’s be more cheerful. The first weekend after Level 2 came in I had the terrible job (someone has to do it) of testing the new Audi A6 Avant Quattro for our sister magazine Company Vehicle. It merited more than a few km’s driving around Auckland, so it was time for a good old-fashioned Kiwi roadie – where the destination is not important, it’s about the journey.
With the admonition to see and support local, a good weekend roadie is almost a duty in these times.
I decided to head in the direction of Hamilton – but not via SH1, rather going via Pukekohe, Tuakau, Pukekawa and Waingaro, for a much more scenic and fun drive. In most cases around New Zealand there is always a good “road less travelled” (but more interesting) option to the main road – especially if it is about the journey not the destination. There are a few even more scenic options if time really is not of the essence – Port Waikato – Te Akau – Waingaro or on the other side of SH1 Maramarua and round the eastern side of Lake Waikare are alternatives I have used in the past. Heading North from Auckland you can use Highway 16 Helensville to Wellsford or branch east and go Matakana – Te Arai – Mangawhai – Waipu for instance and there are numerous other options. I am sure those in other parts of the country have their own alternatives
Less traffic – better views and often cool local stores and eatery options to try on the way. We have been stuck at home for quite a while. Why not just go for a drive next weekend?
Best wishes,
Cathy
