Well, this is version two of Ed Speak, as since the original was written a week ago, now the Level four lockdown for four weeks is a reality. The original was more how you might operate at what is now Level two and three and that is still relevant for the future.
The Government’s wages support package seems a real boon if your revenue is impacted and there is the promise of loan guarantees. It does seem to be one time when “I am from the Government and I am here to help you” is real rather than a bad joke. During the lockdown you may need to get staff to take paid or unpaid leave, note if you need to have redundancies you still need to follow the correct procedures.
These four weeks (or more) provide time for innovative thinking for after the lockdown. Working from home is not an option for most of you as you need facilities. This raises practical issues around how staff can stay safe in the workplace (maybe close alternate work bays). It also raises issues of staff availability due to self isolation. Could some staff take work home if no major equipment is required? They could pick up and drop off vehicles from a central location – obviously challenges around getting parts and health and safety, but some good old Kiwi ingenuity and can-do attitude might save the day. On a positive note, car use is likely to grow vs public transport once the lockdown ends as it provides a safer environment.
