Which Scanner to use?

Workshop Equipment

When a vehicle is taken to a mechanic, they normally connect a diagnostic machine to a vehicle to determine any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) present. The modern motor vehicle is essentially a combination of computers connected to control and monitor a growing number of systems ranging from the engine control module to the airbag computer to the latest radar safety systems. Diagnostic tools use a range of software that can access the vehicle’s reporting and computer systems where faults and errors are logged. Performing this simple scan test can tell a mechanic / technician a lot about the condition of the vehicle and can help to pinpoint areas that require immediate attention.

Some basic guidelines around scan tools. If you need to use a diagnostic scan tool you know that it can be difficult deciding which scanner fits your needs and which is the best “bang for your buck”. We all want to find the ultimate bargain deal and the best price around and you may already know that Launch’s diagnostic equipment has one of the best reputations for the widest domestic and international vehicle coverage, scanner functionality and reliability amongst the comparable alternative brands. Many online pretenders try to copy and even some local nonofficial resellers try to sell fake Launch / cloned scan tools in NZ. Once you have decided you need a Launch to complement your toolbox, all you need to do is decide which level of functionality and features you need.

Entry Level: Launch makes code readers which are designated with the CRP followed by CRP123, CRP129, CRP229, CRP329 CRP429 CRP529. Designed as entry level and DIY, these are generally used for basic resets and OBD code DTC reading and clearing. They can only clear OBD output codes and in many cases will NOT clear module specific fault codes. Limp modes can stay on even after an OBD code clear.  These are Not recommended for any Workshops, or trade users as the primary scanner.

General Level: X431 Pro Series scanners: This family of scanners can be confusing, unless you buy a scanner designed for the region you may not get the same. X431 PRO, X431 PRO 3, X431 PRO S, X431 PRO V+, X431 AUSCAN, X431 SCAN PAD 101 and X431 SCAN PAD 071 all from the PRO series family. Some are for overseas use and designed for USA markets, others have been rebranded as the AUSCAN, however is the same as the Launch PRO 3 but has a different cover. They are generally the same depending on release dates, some are old stock so always ask for a 2020 release date and local software added such as the X431PRO3 S + V3.0.  Overseas editions should be avoided like the X431 PRO V+ and online PRO mini because it is not supported and made for Chinese / Asian domestic markets. LaunchNZ will not support an overseas edition scanner. We will try to help where possible. These scanners are mid-range with quad core CPU and varying features depending on model. These scanners are Not to be confused with the highest level the X431 PAD V. But we have other options that can fit you needs as well.

Specialist Level: The Top of the Range Launch X431 series scanner is the Latest X431 PAD V which has AI Cloud technology and reduces the need for a slow feedback help desk. This boasts an impressive 2.0 GHz 8 core CPU, HD 10.1-inch widescreen, 8 + hours use time, docking cradle, Bundled with the widest software coverage of any Launch scanner. And has PASS through programming capability. The X431 PAD series was exclusive to LAUNCHNZ, we have sold all generations of The X431 PAD, X431 PAD II, X431 PAD II GEN III, X431 PAD III exclusively. We Sell the X431 PAD V and now a range of other options also. Check out the soon to be released X431 Station on our website. Dealerships and Auto Electricians and large workshops should consider this scanner. Specialist software for air conditioning systems, transmission, diesel, dealerships wanting to cover more makes have been included. We have also focused on adding local software and various other specialist programs to assist specialists.

Of high importance is all our Launch scanners are NOT OBD code readers posing as scanners, like some other scanners on the market. They not only read fault codes and clear, but reset service lights, code injectors, airbags, key reprogramming, throttle bodies, etc. transmission adaptions, which include Audi, VW, Skoda channel codes and advanced service procedures. Whatever make of scan tool you are considering for your workshop you need to look at actual coverage including domestic vehicles and available functions for your needs. Some are highly priced for what they do. It all comes down to the best fit for the asking price. Call us to find out more details and of course we can provide finance for the cost of what you would make from one diagnostic scan per week. Based on finance on a Launch X431 PAD V set over two years.
It just makes sense.
