The EV market and the subsequent potential for EV servicing is growing exponentially, whilst this is from a small base in New Zealand the numbers are adding up with an estimated 68,000+ EV’s  (BEV and PHEV) here already. In terms of new vehicle sales the MIA reports that in 2022 sales of vehicles with some form of electrification grew strongly with 16,223 BEVs, 7,259 PHEVs and 17,621 hybrid vehicles registered for the year.

Internationally Ford and GM are aiming to have 50 percent of new cars sales to be EV’s by 2030, Jaguar plans to be all electric by 2025, and more and more EV only vehicle brands are being introduced to the market all the time. In New Zealand in late 2022 we saw the launching here of BYD, and Opel, which is returning with an EV only Mokka-E and Corsa-E models.
Workshops need to gear up now to be able to service this growing pool of electric vehicles.

Having modern and efficient EV diagnostics capability will be a game changer for workshops, providing a great way to expand their business into electric vehicle service/repair.

GPC can offer the Autel line up of EV diagnostic equipment. Autel has recently released three new products that will help workshops expand into this market with the Autel MS909EV, ULTRAEV and EV Diag Kit Upgrade Package.

The MS909EV and ULTRAEV packages include the standard MS909 or ULTRA diagnostic units – both tools already well known for their speed, accuracy and ease of use with normal ICE passenger and Asian light commercial vehicles and come preconfigured with the EV Diagnostics Module and supporting software.

The EV Diagnostics Kit is an upgrade package for existing MS909, MS919, and ULTRA models and can be purchased separately at any time.

It provides battery pack diagnostics  for the most popular EV vehicles in the market including BMW, Tesla and VW/Audi, state if charge and state of health of batteries for true condition reporting.

Product highlights include:
• Complete diagnostics of electric vehicles through the conventional OBDII port.
• Complete diagnosis of the Battery Maintenance System (BMS) via direct testing of the High Voltage (HV) battery.
• Recalibrate the HV battery’s State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) to regain battery range and help extend the battery life of the customer’s vehicle.
• Diagnose charging faults/failures.
• The processes are typically for Autel easy to follow with colour diagrams, pictures and text + video prompts to ensure safe step-by-step operation. Many of the EV battery connectors are model specific. For non-model specific connectors, a multi-connector cable is included and pin-outs are displayed on the tool.
• EV’s and Hybrids still require servicing, but the servicing they require is different and more specialised that what has been the norm – really it’s no different to the introduction of common rail diesel systems, and like common rail, to service and repair it specialised equipment and technical knowledge is required.
