A ‘cool’ $2 million back to industry

Servicing

As a result of record collection numbers of redundant refrigerant, New Zealand’s product stewardship scheme for refrigerants, Cool-Safe has paid out over $2million back to industry.

Since October 2022, Cool-Safe has been refining their offerings to market and incentivising businesses to recover their redundant refrigerants. Since introducing the Bounty Buy-Back scheme in 2022, they have been able to increase payments to further incentivise good behaviour for people and planet. An initial offering of $15/kg was increased to $25/kg last year and now sits at $40/kg for all HFC, HCFC and CFCs. This has resulted in a massive lift in volumes being collected and destroyed.

Cool-Safe has a long history of leading the way in responsible refrigerant recovery, being the first organisation to begin actively collecting waste refrigerant back in 1993. Since then, Cool-Safe has reduced the build-up of GHG by 1,496,691 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and saved 39,800 tonnes of ozone depletion. The more refrigerant recovered through Cool-Safe, the more money that is reinvested into the HVACR sector. The expansion of these key Cool-Safe initiatives means more money support of industry, more refrigerant recovered and destroyed, and more greenhouse gas emissions avoided.

In addition to the Bounty Buy-Back scheme, Cool-Safe has launched its Coolest Courier, a free pick up and delivery service to make it even easier to collect and destroy your old refrigerant. For those businesses who need extra capacity, or don’t have their own cylinders, they can order them through Cool-Swap.
