Ed Speak:: Critical thinking

Ed Speak

I recently attended a conference in Christchurch that was based around science and critical thinking – along with exposing some very uncritical thinking (read conspiracy theories).
Critical thinking is something that is not specifically taught in our education system but should be. By using it people would be a lot less likely to fall for internet (and other) scams or believe patently fanciful conspiracy theories – Flat Earth, Big Foot, The Moon landing was a hoax, etc.
At a simple level, how many social media friends do you have, who uncritically share with all their friends the “Win a TV, Campervan, Car” give aways on Facebook – because the post says we are overstocked so need to give these away? Usually these are not even NZ-based and are at best click bait, but more likely are looking to steal your details for identity theft. The old pre-internet saying that if something “Looks too good to be true – it most likely is” still applies (even more so) in these internet days.
One excellent strategy for figuring out the most likely answer to something is called Ockham’s razor (or Occam’s razor). This in essence says that when presented with competing hypothetical answers to a problem, one should select the one that requires the fewest assumptions (or the simplest viable explanation). For instance, a banging door in an empty house is much more likely to be caused by wind than a ghost!
The same goes for diagnosing car problems – always eliminate the most obvious potential problem before chasing after the much less likely.
