Dylan Bennett, a diesel fuel technician at Diesel Specialists Limited, has been awarded the Association of Australasian Diesel Specialists (AADS) Apprentice of the Year 2025. It’s a recognition he never expected, but one that highlights his skill and commitment to a highly specialised trade.
Dylan completed his MITO apprenticeship in August 2024 and quickly became known for tackling complex diagnostic work. He says the industry may be small, but that’s what makes it rewarding.
“There aren’t many specialist diesel workshops anymore. But that means there’s always work, always demand. I’d definitely encourage anyone interested to take the next step and specialise.”
His role covers everything from repairing fuel injection systems and turbochargers to working with pumps and injectors in the fuel room. He also manages quotes and invoicing – an ideal mix of technical and practical work.
“Every day is different,” he says. “You’re not stuck doing tyres or oil changes. The variety keeps you thinking and learning. It’s challenging in the best way.”
Dylan credits his growth to strong support, especially from Jared, the owner of Diesel Specialists Limited, who signed him up for his apprenticeship.
“My confidence has grown massively. The apprenticeship gave me the foundation I needed, and Jared’s mentoring made all the difference.”
He completed MITO’s New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Diesel Fuel Technology (Level 4) and appreciated the constant support.
“MITO was always just a phone call away. From technical guidance to assessment feedback, the support was huge. People would be surprised by how much help and opportunity are available.”
For Dylan, the qualification was more than a milestone – it shaped his confidence and career.
Winning the AADS award has been a standout moment.
“I never thought it was even possible. To be recognised like this is a huge honour.”
