Collins Automotive, located in central Hamilton is the latest comprehensive workshop business to join the growing Bosch Car Service Network.
“It was pretty easy to see that Bosch aligned with our own values,” said Jason Land, the Managing Director of Collins Automotive.
“We’ve always pitched ourselves as a premium automotive business and being able to leverage off the Bosch brand just brings more credibility to our business.”
Jason has been in the auto electrical trade for all 23 years of his working life and sees the partnership between his business and Bosch as a positive decision moving into future as modern vehicles continue to increase their complexities.
“It’s going to be harder to get access into vehicles systems with secure gateway control being tightened up by manufacturers.” Jason said, “Ordinary diagnostic equipment will not always work in the years to come.”
Bosch has helped many of the manufacturers develop the increasingly sophisticated computer controlled systems in vehicles. They also have the ability to provide technical training for his staff on the latest equipment and give crucial insights into electronic systems.
Jason believes small garages will find it increasingly difficult to service the EVs and Hybrid vehicles which are now emerging in the market.
“The protection manufacturers are adding to safety systems and autonomous vehicles makes the support of belonging to the Bosch Car Service network all important for us.”
“We’ve got to invest in equipment and training to keep up with the changes and challenges of modern vehicles.”
The training opportunities and Bosch’s connection to the manufacturers was crucial for Collins joining the Bosch Car Service network, said Jason.
“I kept circling back to it once I considered the proposal. And there is also Bosch’s commitment to customer service. They’re going to make sure we keep doing things right and hold us to account.”
Collins Automotive will also benefit from the network’s wider marketing and advertising ability, its buying power for supplier services and a comprehensive Nationwide Warranty program.
In earlier days, Jason did his auto-electrical apprenticeship in Gisborne and then shifted to the Waikato region for greater opportunities, working on commercial vehicles and heavy transport.
In 2011, he bought Collins Automotive from its founder John Collins. A fire in a tyre shop next door in 2016 meant he had to find new premises promptly and moved to Collins Automotive’s current site.
“The site had a good profile but was really too big for us,” said Jason. So, he bought another automotive business, doubling his staff to 13. Ironically, he also bought the client database of the tyre shop. “We merged the three businesses into one.”
More growth in the last six years has seen the staff grow to 20. Wife Carley, also joined the team. Her experience as a service manager at a previous dealership, was implemented into the business and she now manages the office and administration systems.
Collins offers a comprehensive service for auto-electrical work, general maintenance, suspension, brakes and tyres and has an accredited VTNZ certifier and WOF inspector on site permanently.
Jason and his team work on all kinds of light vehicles, SUVs, utes, trailered boats, camper vans and caravans, even motorbikes.
