MITO’s new training programme provides the skills and knowledge to safely inspect, service and repair electric vehicles.
Designed in consultation with industry and available to qualified automotive technicians, this programme will ensure technicians have the ability to respond to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in New Zealand.
The programme includes a mix of workplace practical learning and eLearning which allows trainees to complete theory elements of the programme in their own time and at their own pace.
They can access eLearning resources, including videos, interactive simulations and online theory assessments, at any time and from any device – mobile phone, tablet or computer. Real-time results and progress reports are available through MITO’s online portal to both trainee and supervisor.
Learning outcomes include:
Overseeing team responsibilities and ensuring compliance with legislative and company requirements to maintain a safe and effective workplace.
Trainees will also learn how to diagnose and repair uncommon and complex specialist system faults in electric vehicles as an advanced technician including:
• Demonstrate knowledge of hybrid electric and battery electric vehicle or machine systems and safety.
• Depower and reinitialise electric vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair traction motor system faults in electric vehicles.
• Diagnose faults and replace an auxiliary starting motor in an electric vehicle.
• Diagnose and repair safety interlock system faults in electric vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair cooling system faults in electric vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair DC to DC system faults in electric vehicles.
The Level 5 programme is expected to take 11 months to complete and includes a mix of practical training and assessment, undertaken via training courses; and eLearning, allowing you to complete theory elements of the programme at your own time and pace.
Prerequisites: trainees must have completed an Automotive Engineering qualification at Level 4, or provide evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge, in order to enrol in this training programme.
