Purpose-built batteries for stop-start systems

Parts

Automotive batteries have gone through significant advancements and improvements over the decades. In the early years, the primary purpose of an automotive battery was to provide reliable starting power for a vehicle’s engine to enable it to travel from one place to another. While this purpose remains, much more is now required from an automotive battery today. Modern Idle Stop Start (ISS) vehicles have complex electrical systems which rely on the battery to power control modules, headlights, audio systems, GPS navigation devices and other accessories while the engine is stopped. Battery manufacturers have had to keep up with these new technologies. ACDelco understands the evolving power requirements of the automotive battery and continues to develop products to fulfill these needs.

The key feature of ISS technology is the ability to turn off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, and automatically restart the engine when required.  This process results in reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Vehicle manufacturers have adopted this technology to take advantage of these benefits, and as a result we are seeing more ISS equipped vehicles on the road than ever before.

Contrary to popular belief, conventional automotive batteries are not suitable for ISS vehicles. Installing a conventional battery will lead to premature battery failure. ACDelco Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) are specially designed for use in ISS systems.

ACDelco AGM batteries are ideal for premium petrol and diesel ISS vehicles with high electrical demands. The battery in these vehicles will be required to crank the engine around 16,000 times more per annum compared to a conventional vehicle (based on average CBD travel of 15,000 km), and therefore require a battery which is capable of handling these higher power demands. Features and benefits of ACDelco AGM batteries include high compression absorbent glass mat separators, increased cycle life and charge acceptance compared to their standard flooded counterparts, higher cranking power (even at low state of charge), maintenance-free operation and a high resistance to vibration.

ACDelco EFB batteries are designed to perform in vehicles where an EFB has been specified.  Many manufacturers use EFB batteries as they are a cost-effective, high-performance battery suited to ISS applications. ISS vehicles require a battery which can support the repeated demand for engine cranking while at a partial State of Charge. Key features and benefits of the EFB range include an ultra-high density plate material for improved corrosion resistance, lead calcium grids with increased tin content, high CCA (even at partial State of Charge) and an improved reserve capacity and charge acceptance.

ACDelco AGM and EFB batteries are laboratory tested, field proven and have undergone numerous quality control checks prior to being released in the market. The impressive warranty period provided for these batteries is a testament to their quality and performance capabilities. The AGM battery range comes with 36 months warranty while the EFB range carries 24 months warranty.

ACDelco is a global leader in the battery industry with more than 100 years of manufacturing experience. The brand’s comprehensive range of batteries reflects its understanding of the changing landscape. Credited with supplying batteries for navy planes during World War II and also assisting with NASA’s moon exploration mission in the 1970’s, they now play a critical role in the performance of modern vehicles, ACDelco has proven time and time again why it is the market leader.

The complete ACDelco battery range consists of automotive, commercial, deep cycle and marine and lawn mower batteries. The sheer comprehensiveness of the portfolio makes ACDelco a great choice for businesses catering to multiple demographics. Parts distributors, battery resellers and auto electricians in New Zealand have the opportunity to distribute a globally renowned brand by joining the ACDelco Battery Stockist Program which is operated by R&J Batteries.

This program offers varying levels of support to allow businesses of different sizes and scales to participate. The allocation of resources and support for stockists is determined based on their chosen sign-up level. A key component of the program is the inclusion of ACDelco Battery Stockist identification, which holds significant importance. Stockists will be granted a subsidy allowance for building and vehicle signage to solidify their position as an authorized reseller of ACDelco batteries within the local community. Stockists will also receive substantial support for Local Area Marketing (LAM) for further exposure and awareness. They will also benefit from branded merchandise, a battery catalogue and various point of sale materials. To enhance their selling capabilities, comprehensive training on ACDelco products, including their features and benefits, will be provided.

R&J Batteries is the exclusive distributor of ACDelco batteries in New Zealand with branches located in Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, Albany and Nelson. For more information about ACDelco batteries or the ACDelco Battery Stockist Program, please visit rjbatt.co.nz or call 0800 546 000.
