As our vehicles get progressively cleaner and less maintenance intensive, it becomes even more critical that when service and maintenance are required, only the best consumables will do.

Oils and fluids are one thing, keeping both clean and filtered is another and that is when you have to know the names you can trust – and the names the OEMs trust.

One of those names is Hengst, a brand of filter you might not have heard about, despite the brand’s biggest trade supplier BnT carrying the euro-centric filter brand since 2012.

Hengst is the preferred filter supplier of choice for a great many European car manufacturers and has lately found its way to other manufacturers, but if Euros are your bread and butter, Hengst should be the first name to come to mind for filtration.

“Remember,” says Hengst category manager Grant Maxwell, “Hengst is OEM product sold at aftermarket pricing and is therefore a competitive, respected product which you can stake your shop’s reputation on, because plenty of top end European car manufacturers do just that.”

Some workshops will likely have encountered customer resistance as to the critical importance of quality filtration.

Pointing out that huge quantities of oil are pumped under high pressure through the engine circulation system every minute to reduce the friction of moving parts, it is vital that the oil filter functions reliably.

A quality oil filter traps dust and other abrasive materials down to 0.01mm in size, reducing damage and wear to engine components and decreasing fuel consumption and emissions.

Some end users need to understand the difference between an oil filter and the air filter, with this last being much more critical than the first.

The air filter has a dual role: the first to filter the air, which can be contaminated by up to 50mg per cubic metre, as it comes into the engine. The second part is to assist in ensuring the engine receives an optimally metred fuel air mixture for maximum efficiency.

Injection systems for modern gasoline and diesel engines respond sensitively to the smallest impurities in the fuel.

Studies reveal that the amount of dirt particles in fuels recommended by the international associations (less than 24 mg/kg) is often exceeded considerably.

Hengst fuel filters remove dirt particles as fine as 0.02mm, thereby preventing them from entering the injection system. Like the air filter, the fuel filter has two roles, the second of which is to separate water from the fuel in modern diesel engines and prevent corrosion of the injection system and its high-pressure pump.

And lastly, the Hengst range includes cabin air filters, which in today’s times, is becoming more and more critical.

“We strongly recommend regular replacement the cabin air filter,” says Grant. “End users may not understand the benefits, which not only apply to their physical health but also the longevity of the air conditioning system of their vehicles.”

“As a rule of thumb, cabin air filters should be replaced at least once a year or – if you drive extensively – twice a year. With a Hengst filter, pollen, dust, other allergens and exhaust gases are nearly 100 percent filtered and fine dust inside the vehicle is reduced.”
