Since its introduction to New Zealand, the J-B Weld family of high-tech epoxy adhesives, bonding and filling products has grown to become a firm favourite with consumers and tradespeople in this market.

Sold as a premium product, J-B Weld epoxy claims to have the strongest bonding action in its class. Such strength makes it suitable for permanent repairs, whereas the majority of competitor products only offer temporary repairs.

Tim Paterson, national sales manager of Griffiths Equipment, which distributes J-B Weld in this market, says: “Think of J-B Weld as having a cross-woven pattern that provides extra strength, much like rebar does to reinforce cement structures. And once it sets, it’s tougher than steel. If you want to permanently stick two items together, such as repairing a cracked bumper on a car or a broken leg on a wooden chair, you’d want to use J-B Weld – it has a proven track record.

J-B Weld epoxies are available in various forms and packages, including twin tubes, putty sticks and easy-mix syringes. Each J-B Weld two-part epoxy adhesive is formulated to provide the strongest bond and is designed for specific surfaces including metal, wood, plastic, glass and more. It’s fast, easy-to-use, safe and certain products come in a variety of colours.

The JB Weld range has grown to embrace a number of other product areas in recent times. These include Anaerobic Thread Lockers for locking nuts/bolts, Liquid Epoxy Wood and Wood Putty for bonding and also filling wood cracks and surfaces, epoxy adhesive sticks such as WaterWeld, HighHeat, PlasticWeld and SteelStick, as well as a high-strength “super glue on steroids” that J-B Weld calls SuperWeld, which is ideal for gluing rear-view mirrors back onto the windscreen. The Epoxy sticks also accept a stain to allow for colour matching.

Another point of difference with J-B Weld is that the silicone sealants and gasket makers use 100 percent silicone. The benefit of this is that shrinkage is minimal.

“When making a gasket the last thing you want is shrinkage when setting,” adds Tim “Other brands take silicone out to reduce cost, which generally increases shrinkage and reduces the effectiveness of the product.”

But it’s not just the amazing bonding performance that has struck a chord with users, says Tim: one of the top selling points is the “No Clog, No Mess” cap and delivery system used on the larger Thread Locker bottle, syringes and Super Weld range of epoxies that enables them to be used over and over without drying out or creating a mess.

“New Zealand consumers have really taken to J-B Weld epoxy because it will bond to just about anything, even in the toughest environments, from high heat and extreme cold to under water,” he adds, “but what has really caught their attention is the unique cap and dispenser, which ensures they will be able to continue using the J-B Weld epoxy over a long period of time after opening it.”

The air-tight cap design comes from the dental industry and can only be fitted one way, which prevents cross contamination. It features an internal plug that rotates within the cap to allow the lid to twist off, but only be fitted one way.
