We video test the 2017 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD GLX-R Diesel Double Cab Auto, “ A convincing package, that is a rugged, reliable work ute that is also comfortable and pleasant to drive on the road.

While the top end, high spec utes get all the glory, there is still a big market for the humble workhorse - the sort of ute that doesn’t have all the flashy bits that you knock off on the worksite. But with the steady car-ification (that’s a word I just made up) of the ute segment, even the humble workhorse has new expectations placed upon it. This has led to the rise of utes like the Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R.

Because tough, functional and rugged actually doesn’t have to mean stripped-out and low spec, the GLX-R is a workhorse with a bit of glitter in its mane, so to speak.

It packs the same 135kW/437Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine as the rest of the Triton range, hooked up to a five-speed automatic transmission (or a six-speed manual, if you prefer).  It can haul 3,000kg on a braked trailer and carry 995kg in its tray, holding up that workhorse end of things, but also comes standard with a number of niceties that haven’t always been common on traditional workhorses of the past.

These include 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, daytime running lights, rear privacy glass, cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity and media streaming, air conditionings reversing camera and a 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

All of this makes for a package that is more than capable of handling a tradies workload, but doesn’t skimp on the modern luxuries that we now expect in even our workhorses. In summary, the Triton GLX-R makes for a convincing package, that is a rugged, reliable work ute that is also comfortable and pleasant to drive on the road.
